Disarray, disgust and despair in healthcare reformers.
It has long been apparent that there was no consensus among ‘progressives’ on the best way to achieve universal health care. From the very beginning, MoveOn and the labor movement gave lip service (sometimes) to single payer ideas but put their money behind whatever the President proposed. As we now know, what the President proposed changed daily, shifting each time one or another well-heeled lobbying group demanded a ‘compromise.’

As predicted here and elsewhere, even a watered-down public option will disappear from sight. How ironic!! How sad.

This is a very interesting notion that sparked some thought for me. Obama may have been viewed as a big win for liberality and progressive ideals in America, but his Administration's actions belie the promise of his election. So Anna Taylor suggests we should "get over Obama" and the adulation that continues to buoy his agenda even while he trashes the ideals that elected him. Anna writes:

I hope everyone had a great holiday over the Senate and House break. I was hard at work even on Christmas Eve. After the Senate passed their horrible bill, I got a call from WLNS news, from Lansing, MI.
The reporter met me after work, and we did the interview in the parking lot. I was able to tell the viewers that it should be Medicare For All, and not all for insurance companies. I even told them that they should kill the bill!!!

Some of those most in need of health insurance aren't on board with either of the plans. One local woman wants congress to throw out the two bills and start from scratch.
Adrian Campbell Montgomery, concerned about health care: " I have three strikes against me for pre-existing conditions."

Herewith a remarkable statement from a presumed right-wing adherent commenting on a WSJ criticism of the constitutionality of the mandated purchase of health insurance:
Joey, I’d be happy if health insurance were treated like any other purchase. Do you think the US government should be able to tell you what you have to purchase? I don’t, so I think the individual mandate is unconstitutional.
"Lately I’ve seen a growing group, myself included, opposed to an individual mandate that would support single-payer health care. If single-payer were proposed, it would essentially indicate health care is viewed as a right. I’m okay with that. I even think the Constitution should be amended if we go with single-payer health care.
